When someone wants to search a map for a street the exact spelling of street name is critical. Almost any two maps or databases will have slight variations in spellings. "LN" for "Lane", "NW" for "North West", and even variations in the spelling of the streets themselves.

Because we anticipate incorporating a large number of different maps into a single regional system, and because these maps tend to evolve over time, we wanted an approach that resulted in a single source for street spellings. Using AutoComplete the client issues a wfs:GetFeature request that directly accesses the map for spellings contained within the map files. Thus when a hit takes place, the spellings are identical.
