We looked for and found a source for NexRad weather. This site has reflective radar images archived for the most recent hour on a nationwide basis. Each image is available in low resolution or high resolution. Images are five minutes apart in age, so it is possible to build a quasi 'weather replay' option for the map.

We opted for the most recent image in low resolution. All in all two lines of code. See an example below.

It should be noted that this street map is OpenStreet Map. We use this only in cases where we want to zoom way out.

There is also useful information available from state agencies, for example: recent traffic alerts, construction projects, and highway traffic cameras.
